Hong Kong’s expenditure on international tourism in 2018 totaled US$26.5 billion, up 4.3% over 2017, and ranked the World’s 11th and Asia’s 3rd largest! HONG KONG vs MAINLAND CHINA
While majority of mainland China’s outbound tourists join package tour during the Golden Weeks, travel season in Hong Kong, where FIT dominates and many enjoy long annual leave, spread out more evenly through-out the year and peak relatively in summer and Christmas! Important or even necessary to reach out directly to well off FIT who often account if not the largest the fastest growing share of business. The annual ITE Hong Kong, first held over 30 years ago, is the city’s only travel fair and it covers both outbound and inbound. ITE 2019 In fact, attending ITE2019’s two trade days, which as usual require registration with business card for admission, were 11613 buyers and visitors from travel trade, MICE and Corporations (15.6%) who come from Hong Kong (63%), mainland China (26%) especially her southern provinces and other parts of Asia (11%); and the two public days by 73665 quality visitors dominated by FIT (84%) who take multiple holidays a year! Highly international, over 85 percent of its 675 international exhibitors, of which 141 related to MICE, and overall 87% coming from abroad.
HELD as PLANNED during PROTESTS Many of the participants attend regularly including ITE 2019 which, despite being hemmed in by three successive large scale protests in Hong Kong in areas close to the venue respectively on the Sunday before opening, the day before opening and on its last day, a Sunday, was held successfully as planned with no loss in exhibitors! There were 6.8% fewer trade and 18.2% fewer public visitors, but reportedly little impact on enquiry and business for those who did come likely to be more serious.
